Sports Betting odds: Variety is the spice of Life
If bookmakers offered only simple odds for a team winning, then sports wagering would be very dull. It is only because of the variety of sports betting odds that betting is so popular today.
Sports betting odds cater to the novice and the professional. The simplest betting odds are the money line bets. These are the odds for a particular team winning. Money line odds can be specified in a number of ways. The American pricing denotes a plus or minus sign followed by a minimum 3-digit number. â€"150 implies that a bet of $150 will win $ 100. +150 implies that a bet of $100 will win $150. The same sports betting odds in the British pricing would be 2/3 and 3/2 respectively.
Often a situation is encountered when one of the teams is much better than the other. In such a case money line betting does not make much sense. Therefore bookmakers have evolved other types of sports betting odds to generate interest among the bettors. One such bet is the totals. A typical basketball bet would be over 200.5 points. A bettor wagering in favor of the bet would win if the total of the points scored by both teams would be more than 200.5. The half fraction is employed to avoid a tie. The most interesting type of bet is the spread. Here the margin of victory is specified. A +2.5 spread would win if the margin of victory were greater than 2.5 points. A -2.5 spread would win if the margin of victory were less than 2.5 points.
